Four Ways to Recharge (Without a Vacation!)

Jun 22, 2026

Summer is here, and many people are looking forward to taking a break from work, school, or other responsibilities. A vacation is a great way to combat stress and burnout, but not everyone has the time, budget, or flexibility to travel far from home.

If a summer getaway isn’t in the cards for you, don’t worry. There are still ways you can rest, recharge, and take care of your mental well-being, all without leaving town. Here are some ideas:

1.    Make the Most of Mini Breaks
When time off isn’t possible, make an effort to schedule a few “mini” 15 to 20-minute breaks throughout your day. It can be a quick walk around the block, a coffee pick-me-up, a few pages of a book, or an uninterrupted minute of meditation. It doesn’t matter what you do. What matters is that you’re taking time just for you.

2.    Plan a Weekend Staycation
One of the best ways to rest and recharge is to mix up your normal routine. You can do this without even leaving town. Take a day or a long weekend to explore your city like a tourist. Treat it like a real vacation by visiting local attractions, making plans and reservations, and taking photos.

3.    Disconnect to Reconnect
Technology can make us feel like we’re always available, and that can be draining. If you need a break, it’s a good idea to “unplug” for at least a day. Turn off your notifications, set an away message on email, and step back from social media. You may be surprised at how present and energized you feel when you disconnect, even for just a few hours.

4.    Do What Brings You Joy
When life gets busy, our hobbies are usually the first to fall off the to-do list. Think of activities that bring you joy. Then, make time for those activities, whether it’s hiking, painting, dancing, cooking, fishing, listening to music, or even trying something brand new.

If you’re stuck, think about what you enjoyed doing as a child. Revisiting those activities can help you find the sense of fun that often gets lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

What to Do When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed

While vacations and staycations can provide relief from the stress of everyday life, they’re no substitute for addressing ongoing stress, anxiety, or burnout. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or not like yourself even after taking a break, it’s important to pay attention to your mind and body.
