How to Find a Therapist That's Right for You

So, you’re thinking of trying therapy. That’s wonderful! Therapy is a valuable tool that anyone can benefit from — whether you’re navigating a specific challenge, managing a mental health diagnosis or simply looking for more guidance and clarity in your life.
Finding a therapist might feel overwhelming at first. Just like any other relationship, it takes time and trust to find the right fit. Here are some tips to help you get started:
#1. Understand What You’re Looking For
First, take some time to think about why you’re seeking therapy. Are you dealing with anxiety, grief or depression? Going through a big life change? Need help navigating your career or relationships? Having a general idea of what you’d like to discuss and the goals you’d like to achieve can help you find a therapist who specializes in those areas.
#2: Know Your Coverage Options
Therapy can range in cost depending on the provider and whether or not it’s covered by your insurance. If you have insurance, you can typically browse a list of in-network options on your insurer’s website. In addition to in-person therapy, many providers also offer teletherapy, which can be cost-effective. Some private practices and individual therapists even offer a sliding scale for those needing financial assistance.
If you don't currently have insurance, there are alternatives to help break down barriers to care. The Mental Health Recovery Board serving Warren and Clinton Counties can help with the cost as you get started with treatment and other services from our provider agencies. At the same time, the agency where you seek care can help you apply for insurance coverage.
#3: Do Your Research
Not all therapists or counselors are alike in their background, qualifications, and approach. It’s worth taking some time to research and learn about who you might be working with. Reading provider bios and patient reviews online can give you some initial insights.

What’s Next?
When you first start therapy, you’ll be asked to fill out some paperwork, including an assessment to better understand your challenges, needs, and goals. It might feel uncomfortable at first, but that’s completely normal. It’s important to be open and honest so your new therapist can give you the best support possible.
The most important thing to remember is that you are part of the process. You’ll get to make the decisions and work with your therapist to create a treatment plan that feels right for you.
Therapy takes time. Experts recommend trying at least three to five sessions to see if your therapist is a good fit for you. Keep going—your mental health matters, and so does finding the right support.
